Time for the Giants to Clean House

TIME FOR THE GIANTS TO CLEAN HOUSE

Giants GM Dave Gettleman

The Giants, once again, find themselves at the very bottom of the NFL before the calendar has even hit November. Kids haven’t even gone trick-or-treating yet, and the Giants season is effectively over. A 1-5 record through 6 weeks is essentially a death sentence in the NFL. No playoffs for the Giants again, for they’ve only had one playoff appearance since their unlikely 2011 Super Bowl run.

What’s wrong with the Giants? What has turned a once proud franchise into the laughing stock of the NFL? It’s poor management and poor coaching.

General Manager Dave Gettleman took over the Giants following a brutally disappointing 2017 campaign, which resulted in the firing of long time GM Jerry Reese. Gettleman promised to improve the Giants offense line and bring winning back to New York, neither of which have happened under his tenure.

The Giants continue to have one of the worst offensive lines in the league, and have every season he’s been GM. With Gettleman came a new coach, who didn’t last long and was fired after two disappointing seasons. Last year seemed to have some promise after a horrible start. Despite finishing 6-10, we only missed the playoffs because the Eagles failed to beat the Redskins in the final game of the regular season. We were very close to hosting a playoff game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a 6-10 division winner. But that hope was all false hope, for the Giants defense that we thought had some promise at the end of last year, has turned into one of the worst defenses in the NFL.

Dave Gettleman’s tenure must come to an end. It should have come to an end after last season. Gettleman has made poor pick after poor pick. His worst pick, in my eyes, was taking running back Saquon Barkley with the 2nd overall pick in the NFL draft. No serious person takes a running back with the 2nd overall pick in the draft. Barkely had a breakout season in 2018, winning the Offensive Rookie of the Year award. But it was to no avail, and the Giants finished 5-11 that year and were non-competitive for most of the season.

2019 and 2020 were injury plagued seasons for Barkley, only appearing in 13 games in 2019 and missing almost the entire 2020 campaign due to a torn ACL that he suffered in Week 2 against the Chicago Bears. Barkley had started the first five games this season, but another injury against the Cowboys in Week 5 has sidelined him for a few weeks.  Everyday it becomes more and more clear that drafting a running back with the 2nd overall pick was a huge mistake.

If the Giants were smart, they’d trade Barkley immediately. The Giants have an option to pick up the last year of his contract for 2022, but that would be a mistake. There’s no way the Giants should pay an injury plagued running back, who gets all of his game yardage from one or two explosive plays, max money. We should trade him while he still has value and admit that drafting him was a mistake and a waste of time.

Next, The Giants need to fire Gettleman and the entire coaching staff immediately following the conclusion of what is bound to be another terrible season. The Giants need to, for once, hire a young offensive minded head coach. The rest of the league has and it’s worked. Take a look at the Rams, Cardinals, Browns, Bills, 49ers, etc. You want to know why they score so many points? They have a creative offensive head coach and a well run front office. Those are two things the Giants don’t have and desperately need.  Fans are running out of patience, and it’s time for Mara to get a hire right for the first time in two decades.

The Yankees Need to Change Their Philosophy

The Yankees are far too reliant on analytics  T. Ingals  @StickyClickSM Yankees GM Brian Cashman, photo by Rich Schultz/Getty Images. The Yankees made it to Game 7 of the 2017 ALCS as a 91-win Wild Card team. They were down 0-2 in the Division series and clawed their way back to win three straight and advance to the precipice of the World Series, a place they hadn't been in 8 years. They lost Games 6 and 7 in Houston, to a team that we now know was cheating, and as a result the Yankees fired long time manager, Joe Girardi.  Why did they fire Girardi? He was the manager of their last championship team. He had to manage his way around poor contracts, and retirement tour after retirement tour. 2017 was the first year in which Joe Girardi was given a new, young team, that wasn't hanging on the success of the late 90s and early 2000s. He wildly overperformed with them. That team, with that pitching, had no place being a game away from the World Series. But Joe Girardi wasn't t...

The Tom Brady Effect is Like the Tiger Effect

T. Ingals  @StickyClickSM We’ve spent a countless number of Sundays watching the best golfers in the world crumble at the sound of Tiger Woods’ footsteps. This past Sunday, we saw another GOAT create the same mayhem for his athletic adversaries.  The Los Angeles Rams should have blown the Tampa Bay Buccaneers out. In the first half, Tom Brady put on display one of the worst playoff performances of his career. The Buccaneers were noncompetitive in the first half and didn’t look like they even belonged on the same field as the Rams. And the beginning of the second half was more of the same. The Buccaneers looked anemic on offense.  But somehow, against all odds, after being down 27-3 in the third quarter, the Buccaneers willed themselves back into the game. The Rams, as if they were a golfer leading the Arnold Palmer Invitational with Tiger Woods breathing down their neck, began to unravel.  They fumbled three times in the second half, including a snap-miscommunication...

What I Think the Yankees Should do This Offseason

THE YANKEES HAVE HOLES THAT MUST BE ADDRESSED T. Ingals  @StickyClickSM Cashman during Yankees batting practice. Photo by Jim McIsaac/Getty Images. The Yankees have a bevy of holes that need to be addressed this offseason. The lineup that the Yankees trotted out for the Wild Card game against Boston at Fenway Park wasn't even a professional lineup. The bottom seven guys in the lineup were automatic outs. It's clear that changes need to be made.  Shortstop The Yankees are going to be in the market for a young hot-shot shortstop. Fortunately, the market is going to be flooded with them this offseason. Javy Baez, Trevor Story, Carlos Correa, and Corey Seager will all be available. My personal preference is Seager or Correa. I want nothing to do with Baez or Story, both are strikeout machines and Baez is arguably the most undisciplined hitter in all of baseball. He's in the bottom percentile in league walk rate and in the top percentile in league strikeout rate. He's also a...
